Fear and Phobia - Can You Tell the Difference?
Health April 22nd, 2008Today, phobias have become a serious problem. When you encounter a phobia, it has power to debilitate your rational intelligence even when you have a healthy mind. So, you should treat the phobias sincerely with appropriate caution. You need not worry too much if you have any one of the common phobias. But, there are some interesting unusual phobias which are very rare in nature and only few people experience them.
Now, let us see the basic difference between a fear and a phobia. Suppose you enjoy handling snakes and never hesitate to grab it by the neck. But you will feel nervous and anxious if a cobra is handed over to you. In the same way you may not have any problem when harmless spiders crawl on you, but you will be panicky and serious if a black widow is allowed to crawl upon your arm. Such kind of fear is a sensible and healthy reaction faced by everyone. But, when you feel panic and fear in an abnormal way, then it is a thing of concern and can be named as a phobia.
In the case of phobia, the whole of your mind is filled with a desire to avoid the source of phobia. Even if you merely think of the object that causes phobia, you will feel the symptoms as if you physically face them. When you undergo treatment for phobia, your phobia severity will be scored on a scale ranging from 1 to 10 points, where ten is the maximum imagination of terror and one is where you feel slight uneasiness.
The treatment will be given to you according to severity. You can, with some difficulty, handle fear up to level 7, and anything above level 8 will completely take over your mind.
